When the heat quits, work through the free checks first: thermostat mode and batteries, the furnace service switch, the breaker, the filter, and the furnace door safety switch. These solve a meaningful share of no-heat calls. If none of them restores heat, book a technician and protect the house from freezing while you wait.
The two-minute checklist
Do these in order before calling. A technician will start here anyway.
- Thermostat set to HEAT, fan on AUTO, temperature above room temperature
- Thermostat batteries, if it takes them
- The service switch beside the furnace, which looks like a light switch
- The breaker at the panel, off and back on once
- The filter, replaced if you cannot see light through it
- The furnace front panel, seated fully so the door switch closes
When to stop and call immediately
If you smell gas, do not touch switches. Leave the house and call the FortisBC emergency line from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and call 911.
If you smell burning or see scorching at the furnace, shut it off at the service switch and leave it off.
How to protect the house while you wait
Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, keep a trickle running at the most exposed tap if temperatures are below freezing, close off unused rooms, and use blankets rather than unvented portable propane heaters indoors.
