Most install delays come from access rather than equipment. Clear the path from the door to the furnace, clear the outdoor pad, arrange parking for a truck and trailer, keep pets away from propped-open doors, and settle thermostat placement and filter type before the day so nobody is deciding on the fly.
The day before
Twenty minutes of preparation prevents most of the common hold-ups.
- Clear a path at least a metre wide from the entry to the equipment
- Move stored items at least a metre back from the furnace or tank
- Clear the outdoor pad area for heat pump or AC work
- Unlock gates and clear the crawlspace hatch if the equipment is under the house
- Reserve parking close to the house for a truck and trailer
On the day
Expect the water or gas off for part of the day, and doors propped while equipment moves. Keep pets in a closed room, and plan for noise during removal and duct work.
Someone over eighteen needs to be reachable to approve any change discovered once the old unit is out, such as a vent or gas line that no longer meets code.
Decisions worth making early
Thermostat location if it is moving, filter type and thickness, and whether you want a media cabinet added while the system is open. Deciding these in advance avoids compromise choices made in the moment.
We fabricate transitions in our own Maple Ridge shop, so when the old unit comes out and the new one needs a different connection, we make the part rather than sending the crew away.
