A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in both directions: in summer it moves heat out of your home, and in winter it extracts heat from outdoor air — even cold air — and moves it inside. Because it moves heat rather than creating it, it delivers far more heating per dollar of electricity than baseboards or an electric furnace, and the Lower Mainland's mild winters are close to ideal operating conditions.
Does a heat pump really work when it's cold out?
Yes — modern cold-climate heat pumps maintain useful output well below freezing, and Fraser Valley winters spend most of their time above that line. On the handful of genuinely cold nights each year, a dual-fuel system hands off to a gas furnace, or electric backup elements cover the gap.
The honest caveat: output does decline as temperature drops, which is why correct sizing against a real heat-loss calculation matters more for heat pumps than for any other system we install.
Ducted or ductless — which type fits your home?
If your home has ducts, a central heat pump replaces (or pairs with) your furnace and uses the ductwork you already own. No ducts? Ductless mini-splits put a quiet indoor head in each zone — the standard solution for older hydronic homes, additions, and suites.
What are the common failure modes to avoid?
The big three are oversizing (short-cycling, poor dehumidification), undersized or leaky ductwork strangling a correctly sized unit, and skipped maintenance — a heat pump runs year-round, so it needs its coils, filters, and refrigerant charge checked more faithfully than a furnace that rests all summer.
