What shortens life is a unit that was oversized at install, starved of airflow by undersized ducts, or never serviced, all of which make it cycle more often than it was designed to.
What actually determines lifespan?
Run hours matter far less than cycle count. Every ignition and shutdown stresses the heat exchanger through expansion and contraction, so a furnace that short cycles ages faster than one that runs long, steady cycles.
- Correct sizing from a heat-loss calculation, not square footage
- Ductwork that can actually carry the rated airflow
- Annual maintenance, especially burner and blower cleaning
- Filters changed on schedule rather than when they are visibly grey
- A properly sloped condensate drain on high-efficiency units
What are the signs yours is near the end?
Age plus symptoms is the honest test. A 12-year-old furnace with one failed part is worth fixing. An 18-year-old furnace with rising bills, uneven heat, and a second repair in two seasons usually is not.
