For most Fraser Valley homes the honest answer is: it depends on your gas line, your ductwork, and how long you plan to stay. A modern cold-climate heat pump handles our mild, wet winters efficiently and cools in summer; a high-efficiency gas furnace still wins on raw heating power and lower upfront cost. Many of the systems we install are dual-fuel — a heat pump doing most of the work with a gas furnace as backup for cold snaps.
When does a heat pump make the most sense?
Heat pumps shine in the Lower Mainland because our winters hover around freezing rather than far below it. A heat pump moves heat instead of generating it, so in this climate it can deliver two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.
- You want one system for both heating and cooling
- Your home has no gas service, or you want to move away from gas
- You're replacing electric baseboards — the operating-cost drop is dramatic
- You plan to stay in the home long enough for efficiency savings to repay the higher install cost
When is a gas furnace still the right call?
If your home already has good ductwork and gas service, a high-efficiency furnace is the lowest-friction replacement: lower equipment cost, fast powerful heat, and proven reliability. It's also the right backup half of a dual-fuel system — the furnace takes over on the coldest mornings when a heat pump works hardest.
What do people get wrong when comparing the two?
The most common mistake we see is comparing equipment price alone. A furnace quote that ignores ductwork condition, and a heat pump quote that ignores electrical panel capacity, are both incomplete — the install details decide whether either system performs as promised.
The second mistake is oversizing. A system sized by square footage alone, rather than a proper heat-loss calculation, short-cycles, wears out early, and never hits its rated efficiency.
Big Valley Heating & Sheet Metal has installed and serviced both system types across the Fraser Valley since 1986, and we fabricate our own ductwork in our Maple Ridge shop — so our comparisons come from live jobs, not brochures.
