A heat exchanger is the sealed metal chamber or set of tubes inside a gas furnace where burner flames heat the metal and household air blown across the outside picks up that heat. It keeps combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, separate from the air you breathe. Cracks or corrosion can let those gases escape.
Why it matters to you
Every ignition and shutdown expands and contracts the metal, so furnaces that short-cycle or are starved of airflow age their heat exchangers faster. In older Fraser Valley furnaces, a cracked heat exchanger is the one finding that usually ends the repair-or-replace conversation.
Practical guidance
Have the heat exchanger inspected during annual service — it cannot be checked without opening the unit. If a technician reports a crack, ask to see photos or a camera image and keep a working CO alarm near sleeping areas.
