Ductwork & Sheet Metal

What Is Custom Sheet Metal Ductwork?

Custom sheet metal ductwork is rigid galvanized steel duct, trunks, transitions, and fittings fabricated to the exact dimensions of a home and its equipment, rather than assembled only from stock catalogue parts. Made-to-fit metal reduces turbulence, pressure loss, and leakage at joints, helping the furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump deliver its rated airflow.

Why it matters to you

Older Fraser Valley homes, additions, and finished basements often need odd-sized transitions and offsets that no catalogue carries. Stock fittings forced into those spaces, or crushed flex duct, are common causes of cold rooms and noisy systems.

Practical guidance

Have ductwork evaluated whenever you replace major equipment, because new equipment on poor ducts wastes the upgrade. Ask whether the contractor can fabricate fittings to fit your space or will rely only on stock parts.

Why does custom ductwork matter if I am buying a high-efficiency system?

Ducts set the ceiling on how well any furnace or heat pump performs. Undersized trunks, leaky joints, and poorly made transitions cut airflow, so even top-rated equipment cannot deliver its rated comfort or efficiency. Matching the ducts to the equipment is part of getting what you paid for.

What does in-house fabrication change on a real job?

Measurements taken in your mechanical room can become plenums, transitions, offsets, and custom fittings built for that job instead of approximated from a catalogue. Big Valley Heating & Sheet Metal has fabricated custom ductwork in its own Maple Ridge shop since 1986, so odd-sized parts for older homes can be made rather than forced.

What drives the cost of ductwork modifications?

Cost depends on how much duct is changed, access through finished ceilings and walls or crawlspaces, the number of custom fittings, and whether returns or new branches are added. A site visit with airflow and static pressure measurements is the only way to scope it accurately.

When should I have my ductwork checked?

Any time you replace equipment, add cooling or a heat pump, finish a basement or build an addition, or notice rooms that heat unevenly, a loud or weak system, or excess dust. Duct problems often look like equipment problems.
