Static pressure is the resistance to airflow that a furnace or air handler blower works against, measured in inches of water column. Filters, coils, undersized ducts, tight fittings, and closed registers all add to it. When total external static pressure exceeds the equipment's rating, airflow drops, rooms go short of air, and efficiency suffers.
Why it matters to you
Many older Fraser Valley homes have ducts originally sized for heating only, and adding cooling, a heat pump, or a denser filter can push static pressure too high. High static is a common reason a new system is louder or weaker than expected.
Practical guidance
Ask for static pressure to be measured during maintenance and before a filter upgrade or equipment replacement. If it is high, the fix is usually in the ductwork, such as a larger return or better transitions, rather than a bigger unit.
