Zoning divides a home into separately controlled areas, each with its own thermostat. In a ducted system, motorized dampers in the ductwork open and close to send conditioned air only where a zone calls for it, managed by a zone control panel. Ductless systems zone naturally, because every indoor head has its own independent control and setpoint.
Why it matters to you
Two-storey and split-level Fraser Valley homes, finished basements, and additions often run warmer or colder than the rest of the house. Zoning can help, but it only works when the ductwork can carry enough air to each zone.
Practical guidance
Before adding zone dampers, have the ductwork checked; uneven rooms are often caused by undersized branches, leaks, or missing returns that zoning alone will not fix. A zoned ducted system needs a bypass strategy or variable-speed equipment so a single small zone does not choke airflow.
