Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat through an air conditioner or heat pump, evaporating to absorb heat and condensing to release it. R-410A has been the standard residential refrigerant for years; newer equipment is moving to lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants such as R-454B, a mildly flammable (A2L) blend, under the international HFC phase-down.
Why it matters to you
A sealed system does not use up refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak, and venting refrigerant is regulated in Canada. As the HFC phase-down shifts new BC equipment to newer refrigerants, older R-410A systems remain serviceable, but repair-or-replace decisions on them increasingly factor in refrigerant availability.
Practical guidance
If a technician recommends topping up refrigerant, ask whether the leak has been found and repaired first. When replacing a system, ask which refrigerant the new equipment uses and whether the existing line set can be reused with it.
