HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filtration uses dense media that captures at least 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in size, the size hardest to trap. In homes it is usually delivered through a whole-home bypass unit connected to the ductwork or a portable air cleaner, because most furnace blowers cannot push air through a HEPA filter directly.
Why it matters to you
HEPA captures fine particles such as wildfire smoke, pollen, pet dander, and mould spores, which matters during Fraser Valley smoke seasons and for households with allergies or asthma. A HEPA filter is only as good as its seal; air that bypasses the filter is not cleaned.
Practical guidance
Ask whether a whole-home HEPA unit or a higher-MERV media filter suits your system, and have airflow checked before any change. Replace HEPA and pre-filters on the manufacturer's schedule, more often during smoke events.
